Bob Lian's 1927 Erector Steam Shovel

Bob writes: "I built the steam shovel when I was on vacation in August. This is the early version of the steam shovel with a very complex (and touchy) control system. In order to operate it with any finesse, you have to use the one lever in the back to control the brake (a piece of string around a pulley held taught with a spring). Another lever engages the complex gearing for the take up winch. I had to use a foot pedal to turn the motor on and off. As soon as you release the brake the digger arm will drop, unless you raise the arm by engaging the gearing and turning the motor on. It took me quite a few attempts to keep the the arm from going repeatedly into free fall. One last note - 'batteries not included' ;-)""
